Avoid overhanging trees - rotten leaves may fall into the pond causing harmful toxins. Also tree roots may damage your liner in the future years.

When designing your pond use simple curves not complicated shapes. They are wasteful of the liner, reduce water circulation and create dead spots of stagnant water.

Do not make your pond to small, a minimum recommendation for a pond would be 6 ft (L) x 4 ft (W) and it should be at least 18 inches deep. If you are thinking of stocking your pond with Koi Carp then the depth would be  much better being at least 2 ft - 3 ft. 

Use the soil removed whist digging out your pond to create a waterfall.

Consider viewing your pond it would be nice and relaxing to view your fish whilst you relax on your lawn or patio.
